Heirloom
In this series, I address the cultural connection we have with objects based on their materials and durability. More specifically, the tendency to imbue objects with value based not on their monetary worth but on their longevity.
Since the appearance of the disposable, there has been a shift in what is luxurious (luxury being equivalent to conspicuous consumption) and it appears that now, luxury lies not in preserving the objects for the future but in disposing of them to make room for new ones. This idea is evocative of the court of Louis XVI, where the grand and the ornate were as much a statement of wealth as was wastefulness.
Plastic is a big part of the series, from the usue of resin-coated paper, to the plastic yet endearingly Victorian frames and the subject matter itself. Plastic is indeed the new luxury.
